Artisan frozen food vs supermarket: what actually changes
How a hand-made dumpling frozen the same day differs from an industrial one off the shelf: filling, dough and the label.
The supermarket freezer aisle has dumplings for less. What changes when you pay a bit more for artisan? Three concrete things.
1. The filling
Industrial optimises cost: more water, more bread or soy, less meat. Artisan is minced meat, onion and spices — what you would use at home. You taste it in the bite: the filling has the texture of meat, not uniform paste.
2. The dough
Industrial dough is made thick to survive months of cold storage and transport. Artisan dough is rolled thin and frozen the same day a couple of kilometres from where it is sold — it does not need to survive anything.
3. The label
- Artisan: flour, water, egg, meat, onion, salt, spices.
- Industrial: the list often continues with starches, stabilisers and flavourings.
- Simple rule: if you would not put it in your kitchen, it should not be in your freezer.
Our honest advice: taste the difference once and decide for yourself. A portion of artisan pelmeni costs less than a delivery pizza.
